Why timers quietly ruin strategy games

Why timers quietly ruin strategy games

July 14, 2026 · Markus Behrens

Build timers are the oldest trick in mobile strategy. Start a building, wait four hours, come back. The idea is to keep you returning, but done badly it just teaches you to stop caring.

Iron Meridian is the game that made me rethink this. Its timers are short enough that you stay in the loop, planning your next three moves instead of staring at a countdown. The result feels like actual strategy rather than appointment-keeping.

Contrast that with games where a late-game upgrade takes a full day. The planning stops being about tactics and starts being about scheduling your real life around the app. That's not fun, that's a chore with a progress bar.

If you're shopping for a strategy game, open the build menu early and look at the longest timer. It tells you more about the next month of playing than any trailer will.
